Dissolve (S)-N-methyl-2-[N'-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-allylamino]-3-phenyl-propionamide (0.31 g, 0.98 mmol) in dichloromethane (10 mL) and cool in a dry ice/acetone bath to -78° C. Add diisobutylaluminum hydride (1.96 mL, 1.5M in toluene, 2.94 mmol). Allow to warm slowly to ambient temperature and stir for 16 hours. Slowly add a 15% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (3.0 mL). Extract with dichloromethane, dry the organic layer over MgSO4, filter, and evaporate in vacuo to give the title compound as a mixture which is taken on to the next step without further purification.
