Procedure

A suspension of 3.31 g (8.46 mm) of sulfoxide 34 and NaOAc (anhydrous, 1.10 g) in 9.1 mL of acetic-anhydride was stirred at reflux for 40 minutes. The acetic anhydride was removed at reduced pressure, and the residue diluted with 250 mL of CH2CL2 and 50 mL of H2O. The organic portion was washed with 10% aqueous HCl, 5% aqueous NaHCO3, and brine, dried (anhydrous MgSO4), filtered, evaporated, and flash chromatographed (silica gel, 30% EtOAc in hexane) to give acetate 35 (1.60 g, 44%).
