A mixture of 7-[2-ethoxyimino-2-(5-amino-1,2,4-thiadiazol-3-yl)acetamido]-3-[2-(2-pyridyl)thiovinyl]-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (syn isomer) (trans isomer) (1.5 g), dimetylformamide (15 ml) and methyliodide (1.5 ml) was shaked for six days at ambient temperature in a stainless-steel bomb. The reaction mixture was poured into ethyl acetate. The resultant, precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with ethyl acetate and dr d to give 7-[2-ethoxyimino-2-(5-amino-1,2,4-thiadiazol-3-yl)acetamido]-3-[2-(1-methyl-2-pyridinio)thiovinyl]-3-cephem-4-carboxylate hydriodide (syn isomer) (trans isomer) (2.0 g).
