Procedure
To 4 ml of an aqueous solution of 0.39 g of sodium metaperiodate was added 3 ml of a methanol solution of 0.30 g of ethyl [(3-chloropropyl)thio]acetate obtained in Reference Example 1. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 100 minutes. To the reaction mixture was added 30 ml of a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The extract was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was then distilled off. The residue was applied to silica gel column chromatography. Elution with a solvent mixture of hexane-ethyl acetate (1:3) gave 0.31 g of ethyl (3-chloropropylsulfinyl)acetate.
