In 10 ml of 85% phosphoric acid was refluxed 1 g of 1,2-dihydro-6-methyl-5-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-6-yl)-2-oxo-3-pyridinecarbonitrile for 18 hours. After cooling, water was added and then conc. ammonia water was further added to the reaction mixture to render alkaline. The mixture was extracted with chloroform. After washing with water and drying over magnesium sulfate, chloroform was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from ethanol-ether to obtain 0.4 g of 1,2-dihydro-6-methyl-5-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-6-yl)-2-oxo-pyridine.
