0.24 g of 5-formyl-6-dimethylaminomethyleneamino-1,3-dimethyluracil and 0.5 g of triethylamine were added to 10 ml of nitromethane, and the mixture was heated for 2.5 hr at 80° C. After the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, ether was added to the residue. The resulting crude crystals were separated by filtration and recrystallized from ether to give 0.14 g of 6-nitro-1,3-dimethylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4-dione (Compound 16).
