95 mg of 1,3-bis[[p-(dimethylamino)benzylidene]amino]-2-phenylimidazolium chloride are suspended in 10 ml of saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and the suspension is stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The product (1,3-bis[[p-(dimethylamino)benzylidene]amino]-2-phenylimidazolium hydrogen carbonate) is filtered, washed with water and ether. The still moist product is subsequently dissolved in 10 ml of methanol and treated with 2 ml of glacial acetic acid. The solution is evaporated at room temperature in a vacuum and the residue is crystallized from methanol/ether. There is obtained 1,3-bis[[p-(dimethylamino)benzylidene]amino]-2-phenyl imidazolium acetate of melting point 167°.
