A solution of ethyl 3-hydroxy-2-(3-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)-propionate (1.7 g; 7.1 mmol; from step (vi) above) and NaOH (7.0 g, 180 mmol) in 200 mL MeOH:H2O (1:1) was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then concentrated, washed with ether and acidified. The resulting mixture was extracted twice with ether, and the combined organic layers were washed with water, dried (Na2SO4), and evaporated to yield 1.47 g (98%).
