To a stirred solution of 5-amino-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-3-methyl pyrazole (9 g) in acetonitrile (200 ml) at room temperature was added N-iodosuccinimide (5.5 g). The mixture was heated under reflux for one hour and then left at room temperature overnight. The mixture was evaporated and the residue was triturated with hot hexane. The precipitate obtained upon cooling was filtered off and dried to give the title compound as an off-white solid, m.p. 116-118° C.
