Reaction Steps
A solution of 19 g (59 mmol) of methyl 5-chloro-2-(ethoxycarbonyl)-1-methyl-α-oxo-1H-indole-3-acetate and 26 g (240 mmol) of phenylhydrazine in 250 ml of acetic acid is heated at reflux for 2 h. The mixture is cooled, 250 ml of a 1/1 mixture of water and of acetone are added and the mixture is left standing at 4° C. for 15 h. The precipitate is collected by filtration, washed with water and with acetone and dried under reduced pressure. 17.4 g (47 mmol) of solid are obtained.
