Procedure
To a stirred solution of 6,6-dimethyl-3-methanesulphinyl-1-(pyrazol-3-yl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[c]thiophen-4-one (80 mg, 0.26 mmol) in methanol (3 mL) was added a solution of sodium methoxide in methanol (1.0 mL of a 0.5M solution, 0.5 mmol). The solution was heated at 70° C. for 24 h. after which time the mixture was cooled to room temperature and partitioned between EtOAc (2×20 mL) and water (20 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel, eluting with CH2Cl2:MeOH (95:5), to give the title compound (11 mg, 15%) as a pale yellow solid. mp 202-204° C. Found: C, 60.24; H, 5.66; N, 10.06%.
