1.97 g (52 mmol) of sodium borohydride were added in portions of 0° C. to 9.8 g (51.4 mmol) of 6-ethoxy-2-tetralone in 150 ml of ethanol. The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at 0° C. and diluted with 200 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide solution, and the solution was extracted with dichloromethane. The combined organic phases were washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried and concentrated. This gave 9.8 g of an oil which was further reacted without purification.
