Reaction Steps
Potassium hydroxide (304 mg, 5.4 mmol) was added to a solution of 2,6-bis-[3,4-(methylenedioxy)phenoxy]benzyl cyanide (211 mg, 0.54 mmol) in ethanol (˜5 ml) that had been dissolved in water (2 ml). The resulting suspension was then refluxed for 15 hours giving a pale yellow clear solution. The solvents were removed in vacuo and the remaining residue was dissolved in water. The aqueous solution was extracted with ethyl acetate (1×5 ml) to remove any unreacted starting material, and then the pH was adjusted to ˜2.0 using concentrated HCl. The aqueous solution was then extracted into ethyl acetate and the organic phase was washed with brine (1×5 ml) and dried (MgSO4). Evaporation of solvents left a pale brown residue which was crystallized from MeOH/H2O to give 186 mg (81 % yield) of the pure acid as a light tan colored solid (mp. 176-177° C.).
