Reaction Steps
A solution of 4M HCl in dioxane (20 mL) was added to 8-5 (0.7 g, 1.4 mmol). After 30 minutes, the solvent was evaporated to give a white solid. To this solid (0.3 g, 0.64 mmol) was added dichloromethane (10 mL), and NMM (0.7 mL, 6.4 mmol), and the mixture was cooled to 0° C. Phenylsulfonyl chloride (0.081 mL, 0.64 mmol) was added. After 30 minutes, the mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with sat. NaHCO3, brine, and dried over MgSO4. Evaporation gave the crude ester 8-6, which was dissolved in ethanol (5 mL); sodium hydroxide (0.7 mL, 1 N in water) was added. After 1 hr, the solvent was evaporated, and the residue was chromatographed (silica gel, 25:10:1:1 followed by 15:10:1:1 ethyl acetate/EtOH/water/NH4OH) to give 8-7 as a white solid.
