Reaction Steps

1-(2-Methyl-1H-3-indenyl)pyrrolidine (16.276 g, 81.67 mmol) was stirred in hexane (250 mL) as n-BuLi (98.0 mmol, 49.0 mL of 2.0 M solution in cyclohexane) was added dropwise. This mixture was allowed to stir overnight during which time a precipitate formed. After the reaction period the mixture was filtered. The desired product was isolated as a pale yellow solid following washing with hexane and drying under vacuum and was used without further purification or analysis (14.51 g, 87 percent yield).
