Procedure

3-Methoxy-1H-indene (9.65 g, 66.04 mmol) was dissolved in 150 mL of hexane. To this solution 50 mL of a 1.6 M solution of n-BuLi was added (80 mmol) within 10 minutes After 20 hours of stirring the off-white solid was collected on a medium-size frit, washed with hexane (3×30 mL) and dried under reduced pressure to give 9.72 g of product. Yield 97 percent.
