Procedure

In the drybox 3.8 g (23.9 mmol) of N,N-dimethyl-1H-inden-3-amine was combined with 100 mL of hexane. To this solution 15 mL (23.9 mmol) of n-BuLi (1.6 M) was added dropwise. Upon complete addition of the n-BuLi the solution was stirred overnight. The resulting precipitate was collected via filtration, washed with hexane and dried under reduced pressure to give 3.58 g of product. Yield 91 percent.
