Procedure

A mixture of octan-1-ol (250 ml, 1.59 mole) and toluene (200 ml) was placed in a 1-liter round bottomed flask fitted with stirrer and condenser. Maleic anhydride (153 g, 1.56 mole) was added and the mixture was stirred under reflux for 2 hours. The toluene was evaporated in vacuo and the resulting oil diluted with 30/40 petroleum ether (1.5 liters). The mixture was filtered and left to crystallise at 4° C. Two crops of crystals were obtained, the total yield being 311 g (87%). The crystals had a melting point of 37° C. and infra-red peaks at 1725 cm-1 (C=O) and 1640 cm-1 (C=C).
