Procedure

4-(4-Fluoro-6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-butan-2-ol (2.8 g) was dissolved in pyridine (22 ml) and cooled in an ice-bath. Acetyl chloride (2.9 ml) was added dropwise with stirring. The solution was then stirred for 30 minutes at 0° and 1 hour at room temperature. The suspension produced was poured into ice-water (250 ml) and the product was extracted into ether. The ether was washed with dilute hydrochloric acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate solution. After drying over anhydrous sodium sulphate and solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a pale yellow oil (2.8 g., 85%).
