Procedure

For purification, 1.5 g (0.005 mol) of the above crude (±)-1-(p-phenoxybenzyl)-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroisoquinoline in 5 ml of acetone was treated with 0.42 g of oxalic acid and allowed to crystallize. The crude oxalate was recrystallized from ethanol (30 ml) to give 1.61 g (84%) of pure (±)-1-(p-phenoxybenzyl)-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroisoquinoline oxalate, mp 176°-178°.
