Procedure
4-Methoxycarbonyl-5-methoxypyrimidine can be prepared by heating 5-chloro-4-ethoxycarbonylpyrimidine (23 g) with sodium methoxide (15 g) in methanol (230 cc) for 8 hours. The solvent is evaporated off and the residue is suspended in diethyl ether (1000 cc). The suspension is washed with water (50 cc). The organic phase is dried over sodium sulphate, filtered and concentrated to dryness to give 5-methoxy-4-methoxy-carbonylpyrimidine (6 g) melting at 75° C.
