18 g. 2-methyl-5-(diphenylmethyl) pyridine, 1 liter of water, 9 g. of potassiumpermanganate are heated on a steam bath for about 3 hours until the reaction mixture is colorless. 9 g. of potassiumpermanganate, 200 milliliters of water are added and the reaction mixture is heated for about 5 hours until colorless. Filter and wash thoroughly with hot water (70°-90° C.), combine the filtrate and washes, cool to about 25° C., acidify with hydrochloric acid, and recover the 5-(diphenylmethyl)-picolinic acid by filtration (m.p. 189°-191° C.).
