Procedure

A solution of the ester above (403 mg, 1.2 mmol) in EtOH (5 mL) is treated with NaOH (5 mL of 1 N solution in water). The mixture is heated for 2 hours at 100° C. and concentrated in vacuo. The residue is diluted with EtOAc and acidified to pH 4 with 1 N—HCl. The layers are separated and the aqueous layer is extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers are washed with saturated brine, dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated to yield 3-[6-(2,6-diethyl-phenyl)-4-ethyl-2-methylpyridin-3-yl]-acrylic acid as a white foam. 1H NMR (CDCl3) 7.64 (d, 1H), 7.29 (dd, 1H), 7.15 (d, 2H), 7.09 (s, 1H), 6.20 (d, 1H), 2.76 (q, 2H), 2.71 (s, 3H), 2.33 (m, 4H), 1.22 (t, 3H), 1.04 (m, 6H).
