A mixture of N-(4-hydroxypyridin-3-yl)-4-nitrobenzamide (5.18 g, 0.02 mol) and P2S5 (8.90 g, 0.04 mol) in pyridine (25 mL) and p-xylene (100 mL) was stirred at 140° C. for 18 h. The solvent was removed under vacuo while hot and the residue was purified by recrystallization from EtOH to afford 2-(4-nitrophenyl)thiazolo[4,5-c]pyridine as a yellow solid (3.00 g, yield: 59%). MS (ESI), calcd for C12H7N3O2S (m/z): 257, found: 258 [M+1]+.
