Reaction Steps
A mixture of 2.5 g of 1D, 60 ml of ethanol, 20 ml of dry benzene and 2 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid was refluxed for seven hours, with removal of water as it formed. The resulting mixture was concentrated, and the residue dissolved in ether. The solution was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and water. The aqueous portion was extracted with ether. The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was distilled to give ethyl 2,3-dihydro-5-phenylbenzofuran-2-carboxylate (1E), as a colorless liquid, bp: 180°-181° C., 0.35 Torr.
