1.2 g of sodium borohydride was added in one portion to a stirred mixture of 15.0 g of 6A, 200 ml of ether and 40 ml of ethanol. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure. 1.6 liters of water was added to the residue and the mixture was extracted with chloroform. The extract was dried (MgSO4), filtered and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in 150 ml of chloroform. The solution was filtered through charcoal. 400 ml of hexane was added. The solid which formed was collected, recrystallized from a 3/50 v/v mixture of chloroform and hexane and dried in a vacuum oven to give ethyl 5-(4-(1-hydroxyethyl)phenyl)-2-benzofurancarboxylate (6B), mp: 108°-109° C.
