Procedure
5 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid was added to a mixture of 3.2 g of 7C and 150 ml of ethanol. The mixture was heated under reflux, using a Soxhlet extractor filled with molecular sieve (3A). After 4 hours, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was dissolved in chloroform. The solution was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was dry column chromatographed over silica gel, using chloroform as eluent. The product was extracted with tetrahydrofuran and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was stirred in ether. The solid was collected and refluxed in ether. The solid was collected and dried under reduced pressure to give ethyl 5-(4-(acetylamino)phenyl)-2,3-dihydro-2-benzofurancarboxylate (7D), mp: 164°-166° C.
