To a solution of (3aR,5R,6S,7R,7aR)-5-(acetoxymethyl)-2-(propylamino)-5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-3aH-pyrano[3,2-d]thiazole-6,7-diyl diacetate (100 g, 257 mmol) in methanol (800 mL) was added potassium carbonate (18 g, 130 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred overnight at 40° C. and then cooled down to 0° C. to yield a solid This was collected by filtration, washed with cold methanol and dried. The product 15 was obtained as a white solid (50 g, 74%). (ES, m/z): [M+H]+ 262.9; 1H NMR (300 MHz, D2O) δ 6.17-6.19 (d, J=6.3 Hz, 1H), 4.07-4.10 (m, 1H), 3.93-3.96 (m, 1H), 3.71-3.76 (m, 1H), 3.45-3.69 (m, 3H), 3.04-3.13 (m, 2H), 1.39-1.51 (m, 2H), 0.82-0.91 (m, 3H).
