A solution of 4-phenyl thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (1 g, 5.3 mmol) and rhodanine (700 mg, 5.3 mmol) in 10 mL of glacial acetic acid was heated with anhydrous sodium acetate (1.22 g, 14.8 mmol) for 2 h. The reaction mixture was then poured into cold water. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried under reduced pressure to get 5-((4-phenylthiophen-2-yl)methylene)-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one (1.4 g, yield 87%). MS (ESI) m/z: Calculated for C14H9NOS3: 302.98. found: 302.0 (M−H)−. The crude product was carried through without further purification.
