10% Palladium on charcoal (215 mg) was added to a solution of 3-(4-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)but-3-yn-1-yl)benzonitrile (430 mg, 1.37 mmol) in ethanol (15 mL), the reaction mixture was put under ˜2 kg H2-pressure for 48 h. The reaction mixture was filtered through a celite bed and washed thoroughly with EtOAc. The solvent was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 3-(4-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)butyl)benzonitrile (330 mg, 76%) as colorless viscous liquid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.90-7.87 (m, 2H), 7.50-7.33 (m, 8H), 3.13-3.08 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 2H), 2.75-2.70 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 2H), 1.93-1.85 (m, 2H), 1.83-1.75 (m, 2H). MS (ESI) m/z: Calculated for C20H18N2S: 318.12. found: 319.2 (M+H)+.
