A solution of methyl 4-chloro-2-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)(hydroxy)methyl]-1-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1H-benzimidazole-7-carboxylate (Reference example 215, 703 mg, 1.58 mmol) and cyanomethylenetributylphosphorane (763 mg, 3.16 mmol) in toluene (32 mL) was stirred for 12 h at 110° C. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and purified by column chromatography on NH silica gel eluting with a 0-20% ethyl acetate/n-hexane gradient mixture to afford the desired product as pale yellow oil (212 mg, 0.499 mmol, 32%).
