Procedure
A solution of sodium hydroxide 5N (1 mL) was added to a mixture of methyl 2-(2-(3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)-4-methyl-6-p-tolylpyrimidin-5-yl)pentanoate (0.072 g; 0.168 mmol) in methanol (1 mL). The mixture was heated in a sealed tube at 100° C. for 18 h and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in water and the pH of the solution was adjusted between 2 and 3 by addition of a solution of hydrochloric acid 6N. The precipitate was collected by filtration and dried under reduced pressure over phosphorus pentoxide to give 0.050 g (72%) of the title compound as a yellow solid.
