Procedure
1-(8-Chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-methylpyrido[4,3-b]indol-5-yl)-3-methyl-2-(pyridin-4-yl)butan-2-ol (0.668 g, 1.77 mmol) was dissolved in thionyl chloride (0.32 mL, 2.5 eq) and the solution was stirred at RT for 12 h. Volatiles were removed under reduced pressure, the residue was basified with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, and the product was extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). Combined organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified silica gel chromatography (100-200 mesh) eluting with 5% MeOH:DCM to obtain 0.120 g of product. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6, oxalate salt) δ (ppm): 8.22 (d, 2H), 7.40 (s, 1H), 7.25 (d, 1H), 7.05 (d, 1H), 7.85 (d, 2H), 5.18 (s, 2H), 4.22 (m, 2H), 3.45 (m, 2H), 2.95 (m, 2H), 2.82 (s, 3H), 2.10 (s, 3H), 1.50 (s, 3H).
