Procedure
2-(8-Chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-methylpyrido[4,3-b]indol-5-yl)-1-cyclobutyl-1-(4-fluorophenyl)ethanol (500 mg, 1.2 mmol) was dissolved in thionyl chloride (5 mL) and the solution was stirred at RT for 3 h. Excess thionyl chloride was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (3 mL) and the solution was stirred for 5 min. at RT. Powdered KOH (637 mg, 11 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was heated at 100° C. for 3 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to RT and diluted with water. The precipitate obtained was filtered and washed with hexane, followed by purification by HPLC. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6, oxalate salt) δ (ppm): 7.58 (m, 1H), 7.45 (d, 1H), 7.25 (m, 1H), 7.10 (d, 1H), 7.0 (m, 3H), 6.70 (m, 1H), 4.30-4.20 (m, 3H), 3.65 (m, 2H), 3.50 (m, 2H), 2.90 (m, 2H), 2.80 (s, 3H), 2.20 (m, 2H), 1.80 (m, 1H), 1.60-1.30 (m, 1H).
