A mixture of methyl 4′-[(dimethylamino)sulfonyl]-5-[(dipropylamino)carbonyl][1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carboxylate (XXXVIII, step 2, 555 mg, 1.24 mmol) in methanol (6 mL) and sodium hydroxide (2 mL of a 6.0 M mixture in water, 12 mmol) is stirred at 20-25 degrees C. for 4 hours. The reaction mixture is partitioned between ethyl acetate (40 mL) and water (40 mL). The aqueous phase is acidified to pH=4 with hydrochloric acid (1N), extracted with ether (3×100 mL), and the combined organic phases are concentrated under reduced pressure to give methyl 4′-[(dimethylamino)sulfonyl]-5-[(dipropylamino)carbonyl][1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carboxylic acid (IX-XXXIX), NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 8.37, 8.12, 7.89, 7.80, 3.51, 3.22, 2.76, 1.74, 1.59, 1.02 and 0.79.
