To methyl 2-(3-(tert-butoxycarbonyl(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)amino)cyclobutyl)acetate from step 2 in a mixture of MeOH, THF and H2O was added 1N NaOH (10 mL). The resultant reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 2 hr. Half of the solvents were removed under reduce pressure and 1N HCl was added to adjust pH of the solution to 4. The aqueous phase was extracted with EtOAc for three times. The combined organic phase was then dried and concentrated in vacuo to afford the acid (0.67 g).
