Sodium cyclopropanesulfinate (1.04 g; 8.1 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 1-(bromomethyl)-3-nitrobenzene (1.17 g; 5.4 mmol) in acetonitrile (50 ml) at room temperature. The batch was stirred at 90° C. for 4 hours. After cooling, the batch was diluted with water and extracted with DCM (2×). The combined organic phases were filtered using a Whatman filter and concentrated to give the desired product (1.26 g) that was used without further purification. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, 300K) δ=8.28 (m, 2H), 7.81 (m, 1H), 7.61 (m, 1H), 4.37 (s, 2H), 2.29 (m, 1H), 1.21 (m, 2H), 1.03 (m, 2H).
