Procedure
To a solution of methyl 4-(2-fluoro-2-methyl-propoxy)-3-methoxy-benzoate (450 mg, 1.76 mmol) in MeOH (3.6 mL) and water (900 μL) was added NaOH (210 mg, 5.27 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 1 hour. The MeOH was evaporated and the pH of the solution was adjusted to 3 with 1N HCl. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water, and desiccated to give 4-(2-fluoro-2-methylpropoxy)-3-methoxybenzoic acid. ESI-MS m/z calc. 242.2, found 243.7 (M+1)+; Retention time: 1.25 minutes (3 min run).
