Procedure

BCl3 (1M in DCM, 1.2 mL, 1.2 mmol) was added to (2S,5R)-6-(benzyloxy)-2-(1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-1,6-diaza-bicyclo[3.2.1]octan-7-one (50 mg, 0.167 mmol) in DCM (10 mL) at −78° C. The mixture was warmed to 0° C. and stirred for 2 hrs. The reaction was then quenched by the addition of MeOH (1 mL) and the resulting solution was concentrated under vacuum to give (2S,5R)-6-hydroxy-2-(1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-1,6-diaza-bicyclo[3.2.1]octan-7-one (34 mg, 98%) as a white solid, which was used directly in the next step. ESI-MS (EI+, 211, m/z): [M+H]+.
