A mixture of 6-hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-(3-nitrophenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one (2.3 g, 7.34 mmol), Ac2O (40 mL) and pyridine (4 mL) were heated at 105° C. for 3.5 h. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool and poured into ice-water (ca. 300 mL) and the resulting slurry was stirred for 2 h. The solid was collected by filtration and washed with water, EtOH and Et2O and dried under high vacuum to give 7-methoxy-2-(3-nitrophenyl)-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-6-yl acetate. (2.6 g, 7.31 mmol, 99%). HPLC retention time 6.24 min.
