A solution of methyl 5-methoxy-4-oxo-1-pyridin-3-yl-1,4-dihydropyridazine-3-carboxylate (2.0 g, 7.7 mmol) in 6 M HCl aqueous solution (20 ml) was refluxed for 4 h. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (2.1 g, 95% yield) as off-white crystals: 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ ppm 3.98 (3H, s), 7.78 (1H, dd, J=8.7, 4.5 Hz), 8.36-8.42 (1H, m), 8.79 (1H, dd, J=4.5, 1.1 Hz), 9.02 (1H, s), 9.15 (1H, d, J=2.6 Hz).
