Procedure

Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a solution of N-(3-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl)-2-(5-fluoro-2-nitrophenyl)isonicotinamide 14d (300 mg, 0.72 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in DMSO (5 mL), and sodium ethanethiolate (100 mg, 1.19 mmol, 1.70 equiv). The resulting solution was stirred for overnight at 90° C. in an oil bath. The mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was diluted with 20 mL of water. The resulting solution was extracted with 3×20 mL of dichloromethane and the organic layers combined. The mixture was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum. This resulted in 300 mg (crude) of N-(3-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl)-2-(5-(ethylthio)-2-nitrophenyl)isonicotinamide as a yellow solid.
