A mixture of N-[[2-chloro-5-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)phenyl]methyl]acetamide (i.e. the product of Step B) (2.0 g, 8.0 mmol), sulfuric acid (1.5 mL) and water (7.0 mL) was heated to 120° C. for 15 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled to ambient temperature, basified with 10% NaOH solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to yield the title product as a solid (1.0 g), which was used in the next step without further purification.
