A mixture of 1-benzyl-5-bromo-2-methyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.28 g, 0.83 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (0.163 g, 0.92 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (20 mg, 0.083 mmol) in CCl4 (10 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was chromatographed (0-20% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 284 mg of the title compound as an amorphous solid. MS: (+) m/z 415.87 (M+1).
