A mixture of 1-benzyl-2-methyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (2.64 g, 10.3 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (2.01 g, 11.3 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (250 mg, 1.03 mmol) in CCl4 (100 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was chromatographed (0-40% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 2.4 g of the title compound as a viscous oil. MS: (+) m/z 335.92, 337.89 (M+1, 79/81Br)
