Procedure

A mixture of 5-bromo-1-(4-cyano-benzyl)-2-methyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (2.05 g, 5.68 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (1.11 g, 6.25 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (0.14 g, 0.568 mmol) in CCl4 (60 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was chromatographed (0-45% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 2.27 g of the title compound as a white solid. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 200 MHz): δ=8.42 (s, 1H), 7.65 (d, 2H, J=8.2 Hz), 7.20-7.40 (m, 2H), 5.69 (br s, 2H), 4.87 (br s, 2H), 3.91 (s, 3H).
