Procedure

A mixture of 5-bromo-2-methyl-6-oxo-1-thiazol-2-ylmethyl-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.551 g, 1.61 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (0.315 g, 1.77 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (39 mg, 0.161 mmol) in CCl4 (20 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was chromatographed (0-60% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 100 mg of the title compound as a orange viscous oil. MS: (+) m/z 423.03 (M+1).
