A mixture of 1-benzyl-5-hydroxy-2-oxo-3-phenethyl-1,2-dihydro-[1,7]naphthyridine-6-carboxylic acid methyl ester (78 mg, 0.19 mmol) and N-bromosuccinimide (37 mg, 0.21 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (0.7 mL) was refluxed for 3 h. Solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (5-20% EtOAc/hexanes+1% AcOH) to give 77 mg of the title compound as a light yellow solid. MS: (+) m/z 493.25, 495.14 (M+1, 79/81Br).
