A 25-mL single-neck round-bottomed flask equipped with a reflux condenser was charged with 4-chloro-2-{4,4-dimethyl-9-oxo-7-thia-10-azatricyclo[6.4.0.02,6]dodeca-1(8),2(6)-dien-10-yl}pyridine-3-carbaldehyde 109a (100 mg, 0.30 mmol), 184a (170 mg, 0.60 mmol), Pd(dppf)Cl2 (12 mg, 0.015 mmol), K3PO4 (130 mg, 0.60 mmol), sodium acetate trihydrate (85 mg, 0.60 mmol), acetonitrile (10 mL), and water (6 drops). The system was evacuated and refilled with N2. The reaction mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 2 h. It was then cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified by silica-gel column chromatography eluting with 25:1 of dichloromethane/methanol to afford 184b (80 mg, 54%) as a yellow brown solid. MS-ESI: [M+H]+ 527.2.
