Procedure
A solution of 4-hydrazinobenzamide (0.26 g), in 25% aqueous acetic acid (20 ml) was added to 4-[1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-2H-isoindol-2-yl]-butanal diethyl acetal (0.5 g). The mixture was heated on a steam bath for 2 hours and then cooled. The mixture was decanted to leave an oil which was triturated with methanol (3 ml). The solid that resulted was washed with water (5 ml) and dried in vacuo at 50° C. to give the title compound (0.55 g) as a yellow crystalline solid m.p. 147°-152° C. (decomp).
